5K Event

Girls on the Run of East Central Illinois will Host 5k Event on November 12, 2016.

Girls on the Run East Central Illinois will host its 5k event on Saturday, November 12 at 9:00am at the Mattoon Area Family YMCA. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in 3rd to 8th grade. During the ten-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for an end-of-season celebratory 5k event.

“Participating in the Girls on the Run 5k gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even that seemingly impossible is possible,” says Sarah Dowell, Council Director for Girls on the Run of East Central Illinois. “We have sites across seven counties this fall and are grateful for the opportunity to have served over 2,100 girls in our 11 seasons!”

Please join us at our 5k event on Saturday, November 12, 2016. It’s open to any man, woman, child or superhero who is willing to run, walk or skip to the finish line. All proceeds from the event will benefit Girls on the Run East Central Illinois. Last season’s 5k event brought together 600 participants including program participants, their family and friends and community members. It is a non-competitive, celebration 5k; times are not recorded and race results will not be posted. Registration cost is $25 and includes an event shirt, a finisher’s medal, and 5k celebration. All participants who register by Friday, October 14, 2016, will receive an event t-shirt.
